Course FAQ

What Is a Home Health Aide?

Home Health Aides are trained and certified health care workers who assist people in their homes to complete ADLs or Activities of Daily Living. These activities include things like bathing, range of motion, meal preparation/nutrition guidance, therapy regiments, dressing, and some light housekeeping, among other things. When tasks are complete you are there for companionship and to stimulate the client’s mind. Help with these activities allow clients to remain in the comfort of their own home.

How do I become trained and certified as a Home Health Aide?

Care Right There offers certification through CRT Academy. CRT Academy is licensed by the NJ Board of Nursing to train and certify home health aides as well as deliver the CNA to HHA Bridge Program. The Certified Home Health Aide Training course consists of 60 hours of online or classroom learning and 16 hours of hands on, clinical training. The clinical training allows you to practice what you have learned in a real, on the job setting. The clinical portion of the course CANNOT be done online. Once these 76 hours are complete, you will be tested on what you have learned in a final exam. CNAs only have to complete a 10 hour course. Please see I AM A CNA in NJ, how do I become a Home Health Aide? FAQ

I am a CNA in NJ, how do I become a Home Health Aide?

CRT Academy offers a CNA to HHA Bridge Course that is 10 hours and can be completed online either with your own device or in our facility using our resources. You must have an active and in good standing NJ CNA license to take the bridge course. Once complete, you will have to pass a final exam proctored by our authorized Registered Nurse, before being able to apply for your HHA license.

Are there any requirements to becoming a Home Health Aide in NJ?

Applicants must be 18 years of age, U.S. citizens or qualified legal alien, and have the ability to read, write and speak English proficiently. They must be physically capable of participating in classwork such as lifting, getting patients out of bed, giving bed baths, aiding transfers for those with limited mobility, and other patient related care. You will be required to pass a criminal background check and must be fingerprinted as well as have secured employment by an accredited home care agency before your license can be issued. The NJ Board of Nursing also requires a copy of your birth certificate and a 2×2 passport photo. We require that you bring your government issued ID and your social security card when registering for the course. If you are not a US citizen you must bring in proof of eligibility to work in the USA.

What forms of payment are accepted?

We accept Certified Checks and Money Orders for all non-refundable deposits. All costs for the course MUST be paid in advance of taking the course. We may soon accept online payments for the online course. The Registration fee is non-refundable.

Can I become a NJ HHA if I don’t live in NJ? What is the process?

You can take the online course or travel to Glassboro where we currently hold our in-person classes. Once you have completed your 60 hours of classroom or online training you must attend in-person clinicals in New Jersey at one of our facilities. If you are an online student, this will be scheduled for you. If you are a CHHA in another state you must have completed 76 hours or more of certification hours to gain RECIPROCITY in the state, gain employment with an accredited agency and the state can then license you. You do NOT have to take the full 76 hour NJ State Course or test. If you are CNA out of state, you must have an active and valid license and be able to show your license is in good standing. You would then apply for RECIPROCITY in NJ, gain a letter or promise of employment from an accredited NJ Home Care Agency or Facility that employs CNAs and then pay the necessary fees. Once that is complete you may take the 10-hour CNA /HHA Bridge Certification Course.

What are the class rules?
  • In Person classes start promptly at 9am and end at 5pm, please be on time, in scrubs, and ready to learn. Class will not be dismissed until the nurse says so.
  • No cell phone use will be permitted in class – you will get 1 one warning and then be asked to leave
  • No food will be allowed in class, there will be designated breaks where you can leave the classroom to get something to eat or to eat when you need to.
  • Be respectful to the instructor staff and to one another.
  • There should be no disruptions to any of the other employees in the office.
What happens if I miss a day of class?

You may not miss any days of class. The Board of Nursing REQUIRES that all 76 hours are completed and any additional time of the nurse, of course, will cost additional. We understand things come up so please make sure to arrange child care and that your calendar is clear of appointments when registering.

If you miss a day of class, you will have to pay an additional $100 to retake that day’s coursework. Rescheduling a day of coursework must be scheduled directly with the nursing instructor. Additionally, if you miss your scheduled day of clinicals, it is $100 to reschedule another day.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule the course I signed up for?

Once the class is started, you will not be able to cancel. You will have to sign up and pay tuition for another course. You have one week before your class starts to cancel to receive a full refund on your tuition only. Please keep in mind that no matter when you cancel, once you are registered, the $100 registration fee is non-refundable.

What additional costs can I expect?

The following are a list of additional costs and an indication of whether they are required or optional:

  • The course costs are above in item # 5. (required)
$80 to the Board of Nursing for your license and administration fee (required)
  • In addition, you must pay for your own scrubs. Scrubs must be worn to class and must be any shade of blue or grey. No patterns. (required)
  • Notebook & Pen ($10) if you do not bring your own, this is our cost to you (optional)
  • Personal Workbook, we give you one to borrow $30 (optional)
    • If the book we lend you is not returned in condition given this cost also applies
  • Stethoscope + Blood Pressure Kit $20 (optional)
What are the details regarding the Online Course?

The online CHHA course starts every 2 weeks. The course you sign up for will run for 6 weeks. You have up to 6 weeks to complete your course. We recommend completing about 12 hours /week but you can definitely go faster and finish sooner. Once you are nearing completion, a member of our team will reach out to schedule your in-person clinicals. The cost is a total of $300 with a $100 non-refundable registration fee applied which is a part of that cost.
